How and when is Facebook going to merge Messenger and WhatsApp? Unlikely to happen. Unlikely Maybe eventually.
The best time to merge the two would have been several years earlier when Messenger and WhatsApp became part of Facebook.
Here are some reasons:
- Now they are both bigger, more complex, have millions and billions of additional users and have their own fan base that would not take lightly the fact of having to change the preferred email application.
- Jan Koum of WhatsApp or David Marcus of Messenger has to build his own kingdom and probably would not be interested in that (yet).
- both products are growing rapidly in terms of users and features/capabilities. Where is the time to merge and who has the time?
- both products are embarking on their own monetization strategy, so why not wait and see how it goes? Facebook being well capitalized, I doubt that there is an investment problem in two products.
